Setting up Learning Arcade in school
Learning Arcade is a website that behaves like an app. There is nothing to install from a store, no accounts to create and no pupil data to manage. Here is how schools usually set it up.
The addresses
Each app has its own web address:
- Reading:
https://hilearningarcade.com/reading/ - Maths:
https://hilearningarcade.com/maths/ - Typing:
https://hilearningarcade.com/typing/
If your school filters websites, please allow hilearningarcade.com. The apps load nothing from other websites while children use them. The only other address is api.lemonsqueezy.com, which is used once, when an unlock code is typed in (see below).
School iPads
For a few iPads: Add to Home Screen
- Open the address in Safari.
- Tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen.
- Open it from the new icon. It fills the screen like an app, with no browser bars.
For a whole class set: a Web Clip
Mobile device management systems such as Jamf, Mosyle, Intune and Apple School Manager tools can push a Web Clip to every iPad. Use the address above as the URL, tick Full Screen, and give it the name you like. Each app then appears as its own icon.
Keeping children in the app
Use Guided Access (Settings, Accessibility) or your management system's single-app mode if you want an iPad to stay on one app for a lesson.
Chromebooks and computers
- Open the address in Chrome or Edge. Pupils can start straight away.
- To make an app icon: in Chrome, open the three-dot menu, then Cast, save and share, then Install page as app. It then opens in its own window.
- Administrators can also pin the address to the shelf or the start menu through the Google Admin console or Group Policy.
- Typing is made for a real keyboard, so it works best on Chromebooks and computers. On a computer with a mouse, the first tap takes the app full screen. Esc leaves full screen.
Offline use
Each app keeps a copy of itself on the device the first time it is opened online. After that it works with no connection, which is useful when school Wi-Fi is slow. To get updates, open the app while online and then close and open it again.
Unlocking the full version for many devices
The apps open in the browser so you can try them before you buy. The full version is unlocked on each device with a code.
- One code on one device: in the app, open the teacher settings (behind the grown-up check), choose the unlock option and type the code. Do this once for each device.
- A school licence: one code that works on up to 30 devices. There are two sizes: all three apps on up to 30 devices, or one app (Reading, Maths or Typing) on up to 30 devices. A one-app code only unlocks that app.
- An unlock link: add
?code=YOUR-CODEto the end of an app's address, for examplehttps://hilearningarcade.com/maths/?code=YOUR-CODE. Opening that link once unlocks the app on that device, so you can put it in your Web Clip and need not type anything on each iPad. - Each app is unlocked separately on each device. With an all-three-apps licence, the same code works in all three apps.
- The code is checked once, online. After that the app works offline.

Privacy and safeguarding
- No accounts, no sign-in, no names, no adverts and no tracking.
- Stickers, progress and settings are saved on the device only and never sent anywhere. Clearing the browser data, or Clear my progress in the settings, removes them.
- No chat and no links out of the apps.
- Teacher settings are behind a grown-up check.
